Clairemont High School
CHIEFTAINS PUT AWAY THE POINTERS FOR THIRD TIME THIS SEASON, ADVANCE TO CHAMPIONSHIP GAME OF EAST COUNTY CUP:
The Clairemont Boy’s Water Polo team held on to a 3 goal lead most of the contest, taking down Point Loma 9-6 to advance to the Championship game of the East County Cup. Jacob Keville got things started after putting away a beautiful shot from the top on a power play to put Clairemont up 1-0. But Point Loma came to play again, answering back with a power play goal of their own 2 minutes later to tie the game 1-1. The Chieftains applied an unrelenting press on the Pointers, causing 2 turnovers that lead to counter attack goals for Clairemont from Derek Kagen and Jacob Keville. Eddie Hasanagic put away a shot from center early in the 2nd quarter to give Clairemont a 4-1 advantage. But once again the Pointers refused to go away, collecting themselves after a timeout to score twice in the second quarter to cut the CHS lead to 1 at half time.
The 2nd half became a battle of attrition between two familiar teams. Point Loma got on the board early in the 3rd to knot the game at 4 with 2:48 remaining in the quarter. Unphased, Kouki Aihara helped Clairemont convert on a power play the next possession with a donut goal to give the Chiefs a 5-4 lead. The Chieftains continued to dig down deep, ramping up their defensive pressure again, and capitalizing on Point Loma turnovers to extend their lead back to 3 goals by the end of the 3rd quarter. The Pointers fought desperately to close the gap, but Jonah Stratton, in his first start since Diamond Bar after injuring his wrist, shut the door on any come back attempt logging 6 of his 12 saves in the 4th quarter alone. Chieftains Hutton Smith and Nathan Seaux answered each Point Loma goal with goals of their own to maintain the comfortable 3 goal lead through to the end of the game.
