Chieftains News · Bright Future for Monterey Bay

The sun began to poke through the clouds on two Saturday afternoons ago as the final seconds ticked off the Clairemont Girl’s Water Polo season.  A look of anguish spread across the many exhausted Chieftain faces.  They had thrown everything at El Camino High – the #10 ranked team in San Diego and defending Division 1 champions – and came up just short.  The young Chieftains, dejected from the agony of a close defeat, looked to their seniors as they had done countless times before to pick them up one last time.  The seniors held their heads high, showing no signs of sorrow or regret.  They looked up at the final score, 10-8, and reflected to their teammates on how far this team had come – their sophomore year El Camino defeated them 18-6, their junior year the score was 14-2, and earlier this season was 12-6.  With their spirits renewed, the 2018/19 Girl’s Water Polo team exited the pool with a sense of satisfaction.

As well they should.  And the CHS Girl’s Water Polo senior class of 2019 has nothing to hang their heads about.  Ella Denny, Hope Lovich, and Abby Keegan have lead the Girl’s water polo team through their most successful era in school history, and will leave a legacy for future Chieftains to follow.

But the story has only just begun for these three.

This dynamic trio will be taking their talents to Cal State Monterey Bay in the fall of 2019, as all three have committed to play for the Otters next spring.  CSUMB is an NCAA Division 2 school that competes in Division 1, and are members of the Western Water Polo Conference.  Monterey Bay has been a favorable landing spot for CHS Girl’s Water Polo players in recent years too as the Otters are currently captained by Clairemont Alums Olivia Woolery and Morgan Tucker – both of whom have lead highly accomplished careers at MB.
