Game Recap

BOYS WATER POLO DOMINATES SECOND HALF, WINS FIRST EVER CIF CHAMPIONSHIP:

The Clairemont Boy’s Water Polo team claimed their first ever CIF title on Saturday afternoon after knocking off #3 Rancho Bernardo 10-5 in the championship game. The stands were packed with a sea of blue and orange faithful! The fans truly made it feel like a home game for the Chieftains!

The Clairemont boys got on the board first when Jake Stone put away a great pass from Hutton Smith to put the Chieftains up 1-0. The Chieftain defense was lock down, forcing bad shots and turnovers on every possession. The Broncos caught a lucky break towards the end of the first quarter to tie the game at 1-1.

The Chieftains struck again in the second quarter when Eddie Hasanagic put away a pass from the post from Nathan Seaux on a power play to put Clairemont up 2-1. Only 1 minute later and Eddie Hasanagic put away another shot, this time on a counter attack off of a pass from his mate Hutton Smith. But Rancho Bernardo was not about to fold under the Chieftain pressure, and managed to even the game back at 3 with under 2 minutes remaining in the first half. But as the clock was winding down, Derek Kagen burried a shot in transition to restore the Chieftain lead before the half.

As had been the case all season long, the third quarter belonged to Clairemont. The Chiefs got to work in the opening minutes of the second half, fouling out two of the Bronco’s starters before the first minute of play had elapsed. Then the Chieftains put their foot on the gas pedal with back-to-back-to-back goals on three possessions to extend the lead to 7-3. Nathan Seaux started the run with a beautiful goal from the top on a power play. Nathan Seaux helped continue the run with assists to fellow captain Jacob Keville, who took advantage of the Bronco’s inexperienced bench to score twice on counter attacks.

Rancho Bernardo tried desperately to claw their way back into the game in the fourth quarter, but the Clairemont defensive pressure was too great! The Broncos had only managed 9 shots on goal going into the third quarter, and finished the game with 13 shots on goal in 28 minutes of play. Clairemont looked to continue their dominance through the fourth quarter, with Eddie Hasanagic scoring yet again from the post on a power play to push the lead to 8-4. RB, needing a goal to slice into the lead with 3 minutes left to go, had a great opportunity on a power play to score when they hit their wide open best shooter in front of the goal. But Jonah Stratton would have none of it, slamming the door shut and effectively ending the Bronco’s hope of coming back. Cristian Ferretti further put the game on ice when he scored back to back goals to establish a commanding 10-5 lead with 1 minute remaining.

The student section of the crowd was electric in the final moments of the game, counting down the seconds until the buzzer sounded and the Chieftains were officially the champions! Then the entire student section jumped in the pool and celebrated with the boys! It was an amazing show of the community to rally in support of their water polo team.

The Clairemont Boys never trailed throughout the CIF tournament. And the Chieftains will remain undefeated this year in San Diego, finishing the season 22-0 in the county and 28-4 overall on the season.

Game Recap

CLAIREMONT BOYS WATER POLO HEADING TO CIF FINALS:

The Clairemont Boy’s Water Polo team secured their first ever trip to the CIF Finals after defeating Santana High in an epic 10-9 showdown on Thursday night at La Jolla High. The Chieftains came out hot, opening up with the first goal of the game after Jacob Keville converted on a power play. Two possessions later, Jake Stone converted another Clairemont power play after he finessed a shot from the post past the Sultan defense. Before long, Cristian “Ferrari” Ferretti hammered home a counter attack goal to give the Chieftains a 3-0 lead in the first quarter. The Sultans would respond with a goal right before the quarter however.

Chieftains got things started again in the 2nd quarter when Jake Stone hammered home another goal from the post on a power play. But the Sultans were every bit as game as the Chieftains, battling and fighting every inch of the way. Midway through the 2nd quarter the Sultans managed to rally back from three down to tie the game at 4-4. As the 2nd quarter came to a close, Derek Kagen put away a shot on another Chieftain power play to restore the Clairemont lead to 5-4.

Second half was an exciting battle between two powerful teams. Jacob Keville converted on a penalty shot 3 minutes into the quarter to push the Clairemont lead to 6-4. But once again, the Sultans battled back to tie the game at 6-6 with under 2 minutes remaining in the third quarter. After a few desperate back and forth possesions, Nathan Seaux broke the tie with a big shot from the perimeter, putting Clairemont up 7-6 at the end of the third.

The fourth quarter brought drama and excitement! Jake Stone put away a beautiful shot from the center position to re-extend the Chieftain lead to 2 goals early in the quarter. But every time the Clairemont boys created some breathing room on the score board, Santana would respond right back. Less than 1 minute later the Sultans drew within one again. After two more hard fought minutes of play, Jake Stone, despite being triple covered in the center, managed to kick out a pass to Derek Kagen who put away his shot cross cage to push the Clairemotn lead to 9-7. The Chieftains defense was stout on the next two posessions, but as the clock reached just under 2 minutes remaining, Santana struck again to bring the score to 9-8. With the pressure on, the Clairemont boys had to dig deep. With 1:30 remaining, Eddie Hasanagic coverted yet another Chieftain power play after tipping in a pass from Nathan Seaux to give Clairemont a 10-8 lead in the final minute of the game. Santana was not done, and scored on the next possession to close the gap to 10-9.

The final 45 seconds of the game had everyone on their seats! The Chieftains played keep away for 30 seconds to drain as much time off the game clock as possible before Santana regained possession and called a timeout to run their final desperation play to send the game to OT. In the final play of the game, as the Sultans worked to get the ball to their best player on the perimeter, Jake Stone intercepted the pass and sprinted for his life to the end of the pool, effectively running out the clock and securing the victory for Clairemont.
