After some tough losses in LA last weekend, the Clairemont Boy’s Water Polo team came back to San Diego with some fire and passion, coming together for a dominant 13-9 performance over then-undefeated La Jolla Country Day. The boy’s got started off on the right foot by scoring the first goal of the game off a beautiful cross pass from Freshmen Barrett Satre to Senior captain Derek Kagen who caught the ball and immidiately rifled it over the goalie’s head for a 1-0 lead. Few possessions later and Kagen entered a pass into Senior Kouki Aihara on the post who threw a quick backhand past the goalie for a 2-0 advantage. Next possession senior Jake Stone added to the run after breaking away on a counter attack to put the Chiefs up 3-0. The Chieftain defense was lock down from the onset, stiffling the Torrey offense to 12 shots on goal total and forcing several bad shots and turnovers throughout. Freshmen Barrett Satre was instrumental in the defensive presence from the Chiefs, stealing 7 passes in total on the day. Satre jumped a lane late in the first quarter to steal a pass, and immidiately looked down the pool to find Kagen in transition who put away his second goal of the game. The Torreys finally managed to score off a power play a minute later, but Senior Beau Buser quickly ended their momentum with a monstrous shot from the perimeter to give Clairemont a 5-1 lead at the end of the first.
The Torreys came out strong in the 2nd quarter, not willing to roll over at home against their rivals. Two minutes into the quarter and they had narrowed the deficit to 5-3, and had earned a penalty shot. But the penalty shot attempted would not be fruitful, as Senior Jonah Stratton emphatically denied the shot and effectively ended the Torrey momentum as the Chiefs would go off for 3 straight goals before ceding another goal. The Chieftains power play was strong in the second quarter as Stone and Satre both scored on man advantages. Kouki Aihara put away his second in transition to help give Clairemont an 8-4 lead at half.
Third quarter was all Clairemont. Kagen and Aihara were quick to complete their hat tricks out of the halftime break, helping Clairemont jump out to a 10-4 lead. Senior Ben Holombo stepped up in the third with a pair of great assists to Buser and Sophomore Henry Connell to extend the Chieftain lead to 12-5. Senior Stephen Drummy earned a penalty shot late in the third quarter, fouling out the Torrey’s best player in the process, to effectively put the game on ice. Junior Henry Mounier stepped up to the line and put away the shot. After one more quarter of play, the Chieftains came away with a big 13-9 victory!
