The Clairemont Boy’s Water Polo team made a big splash Friday evening at UCSD, taking down arch-rival University City for the first time in school history by claiming a resounding 13-5 victory!

The Chiefs got off on the right foot by winning the opening sprint and scoring on the first possession after senior Jake Stone corralled a rebounded shot from senior Beau Buser and stuffed it home for a 1-0 lead. But the Centurions of UC were not going to lay down, evening the score only a few possessions later. But Clairemont was once again able to push ahead, this time with senior Derek Kagen punching through a goal off a foul shot to give his team a 2-1 advantage. But once again, the Centurions were able to answer back and tie the game once more. Moments later, Senior Jake Stone broke away from the UC defenders and goalie Jonah Stratton was able to pin point him in transition, and Stone easily put away his breakaway to reestablish the lead. But for the third time in the quarter, UC managed to find a way through and knot the game again. As the quarter came to a close, senior Derek Kagen powered another shot past the goalie to give his team a 4-3 advantage at the end of the first.

The Centurions would never come as close again. The Chieftain defense completely ramped up from this point on, limiting the UC offense to 10 shots on goal through the next 21 minutes of play. The Chiefs blanked the Centurions through the second quarter, and scored two goals of their own. The first goal came from freshmen Barrett Satre, who caught a pass from Kagen and launched a perfect shot to the upper left corner for the score. Senior Beau Buser scored an absolutely beautiful shot known as a hesi-lob (ie when a player legs up to their waste, fakes a hard shot, and releases an off-speed lobbing shot over the goale) to push the Chieftain lead to 6-3 at half. Goalie Jonah Stratton completely shut the door on UC with 4 of his 10 blocks coming from the second quarter alone.

The Chieftain dominance continued through the 3rd, as Clairemont blasted out to a 9-4 lead by the end of the quarter. This quarter was completely dominated by senior Kouki Aihara, who scored three times. The first two Aihara goals were off of power plays, but his third goal of the evening was by far the goal of the match. After missing a shot on a counter, Aihara recovered his own rebound, and with 2 defenders on his back, managed to physically out muscle and turn both guys away from the goal and launch a no-look backhand shot over the goalie’s head for an absolute dagger of a goal!

Clairemont continued their dominance in the 4th quarter, outscoring UC 4-1 to close out the game. Jake Stone scored twice more, including an emphatic slam dunk over the goalie’s head from the center from Kouki Aihara to put the game out of reach. Kagen and freshmen Taiki Aihara each scored once more to put the game on ice. The second half defense of the Chieftains was incredible, surrendering only 2 goals and only 5 shots on cage.
