The Clairemont Girl’s Water Polo team impressed at home against Mission Bay on Friday night, rolling to a 15-2 victory behind 4 goal performances from senior captain Ella Denny and sophomore Fiona Flanagan. The girls got off to a sluggish start offensively, struggling to find the back of the goal through most of the first quarter. Credit to the Mission Bay goaltender for making several outstanding saves to keep her team close in the first. Ella Denny once again was once again the go to girl early, scoring a hat trick in the first quarter to give her team a 3-1 lead.

The Lady Chieftains settled down in the second quarter and relied on their suffocating press defense to create advantages in transition, leading to 5 straight goals in the second quarter. Fiona Flanagan and Phoebe Currigan each scored twice in the second, and Denny put away her 4th goal of the game to put Clairemont up 8-1 at half time. The second half was much of the same as the Chieftains continued to stifle the Mission Bay offense on defense, and pushed a lethal counter attack on offense that scored another 7 unanswered goals. The Chieftain’s defense allowed only 12 shots in 28 minutes of game play, and caused 22 Mission Bay turnovers.
