SENIORS SHINE IN FINAL GAME OF REGULAR SEASON:

In a must win game for the Clairemont Girl’s Water Polo team, the Chieftain seniors came through with a huge team performance to secure a 10-4 victory over Point Loma in Friday night’s Senior Game at Clairemont. The Lady Chiefs relied on a fierce defensive press to create 23 turnovers throughout the game, and limit the Pointers to only 11 shots on goal. Senior Zoe Currigan got the Chieftain offense going with the first goal of the game after wheeling her defender on a post up and lofting a shot just over the goalie’s fingertips and into the back of the goal. Junior goaltender Hope Lovich helped extend the lead later in the first quarter by finding fellow Junior Abby Keegan in transition, who put her counter attack away and pushed the lead to 2-0.

The #1 ranked team in Division 3 managed to hold off the relentless Chieftain barrage of counter attack shots through most of the second quarter, but finally gave another one up again to Zoe Currigan with 3 minutes remaining in the half. Currigan would complete the hat trick moments later after getting open once again in transition and finishing a pass from fellow senior Kyla Kleege. The Pointers finally broke through the Chieftain defense in the finally 30 seconds of the quarter to bring the score to 4-1 at half.

Clairemont stumbled out the gate in the third quarter, givng up a goal to Point Loma early, but ended the quarter on a 4 goal run to really distance themselves from the Pointers. Senior Emily Hascall started the run by recovering a rebound off an Ella Denny shot from the top and powering it home for a score. Two possessions later, Freshmen Fiona Flanagan earned a power play for her team, which Senior Kyla Kleege would convert on after blasting a shot past the Point Loma goalie. The Chieftain defensive press continued to frustrate the Pointers through the final minutes of the third quarter, creating turnovers on Point Loma’s final 8 possessions, 2 of which lead to counter attack goals from Zoe Currigan and Abby Keegan.

The fourth quarter continued in Clairemont’s favor. Abby Keegan helped to continue the 4 goal streak by putting away one of the nicest goals of the season out of center. Double teamed, Keegan proceeded to annihilate her defender and power through the helping defender to blast one cross cage to a thunderous applause from the crowd. The Chieftains closed out the game with a little sister to sister assist as Senior Zoe Currigan dished a pass to her Fresmen sister Phoebe Currigan who rocketed a shot to the upper corner.
