CHIEFTAINS BLAST SULTANS IN FIRST, RELY ON DEFENSE THROUGH THE NEXT THREE TO EARN THEIR 5TH WIN IN 7 GAMES:

The Lady Chieftains came out strong on Thursday evening against the Santana Sultans, running out to a big 5-0 lead to start the game, but vanished the remainder of the game and were forced to rely on excellent defense and goaltending to pull out the win. Clairemont got started with a goal from Phoebe Currigan who stepped in to a lane against the Sultan zone defense and blasted one through the back of the cage. Abby Keegan came back on the next possession with a strong counter attack and finished with a quick wet shot over the goalie’s head. A few possessions later, Ella Denny managed to score from the post after Kyla Kleege delivered a great entry pass – her third assist of the evening. The Chieftains would score on the next possession as well, as Abby Keegan blasted a shot home from center off another Kyla Kleege assists. Towards the end of the quarter, Zoe Currigan managed to follow up on a Fiona Flanagan shot, recover the rebound, and stuff home a goal to put the Lady Chiefs up 5-0. Sophomore goalie Zoe Daly, in her second ever varsity start, was instrumental in the first quarter to keep the Sultans off the scoreboard. Daly record 4 of her 6 saves in the first, including taking two shots off the face from point blank range!

But the amazing start did not carry momentum over into the next three quarters. Credit to the Santana Sultans who upped their defensive game tremendously, and to their goalie who denied several would-be-goals to prevent the Chieftains from scoring again. Fortunately Clairemont did not need another goal to take this game, as their defense would smoother Santana the entire game and allow only two goals to get by. Goaltender Hope Lovich would pick up where her Sophomore counter part left off, denying Santana for majority of the second half.
